The routing at Cabot Links is classic in that its holes move naturally from the town of Inverness and then down to the shore. This sense of traveling from a central and busier location to open land is central to classic links: The Old Course is the primary example. The landscape itself, connected as it is to the town and the coast, dictates the routing. Two par-fives in the first four holes demonstrate that the routing is organized around the landscape rather than any preconceived idea. The golfer tacks along the spaces that constitute the holes.
Cabot is, manifestly, a walking course. The experience has everything to do with being able to see all points on the compass; Cabot offers width and openness, so that the golfer can play the angles. Greens are set near tees; Cabot is all about coherence, as in the short walk from the 16th green to the 17th tee. Cabot's golf on the ground and along the sea is exhilarating golf. It is boisterous golf. It is links golf, bold and generous. Hole after hole, the game opens to the player, and the player to the game.
