Inverness County Centre for the Arts
As a regional hub for the arts on Cape Breton’s west coast, the Inverness County Centre for the Arts “celebrates the creative spirit of the artists of Inverness County.” The Centre showcases the work of artists from across Canada and around the world, and features an exhibition space, gallery, and gift shop. With its array of local handcrafted products, it’s the ideal place to find a souvenir or gift.
Dating back to 1928, the Inverness Raceway continues to be a wildly popular sporting attraction in town. It’s a great way to spend a few hours watching live harness racing, enjoying the local flavour, and placing a bet on a favourite horse. Races are held Wednesdays and Sundays in July and August (Sundays only in June and September); simulcast racing is usually on Thursday to Saturday nights, and Sunday afternoons.
Inverness Village Market
Each Saturday, the Inverness Village Market on Mill Road showcases the creativity, crafts, and culinary talents of community vendors. It’s hosted by Mill Road Social Enterprises, a local vocational agency for adults who have intellectual disabilities. Take a stroll through the market, and shop for products ranging from baked goods to artwork, enjoy a complimentary cup of tea and an oatcake, and have a lunch of seafood chowder.
Just a short drive south of Cabot Links, Glenora Distillery is home to North America’s first single malt whisky. Flagship spirits include the Glen Breton Rare 25 Year and the Glen Breton Rare Cabot Links 19 Year. Its restaurant and pub serve up seasonal dishes and live local music daily. Book a tour and explore this amazing piece of Cape Breton history. (And don’t forget to ask about the VIP tour experience.)
